The Internet: How Voice Actors Max its Power
For Jobs, Education, Research and Networking
Friday, 11am-12:30pm
All levels of experience.

Moderator: John Florian, VoiceOverXtra
Panelists: Peter K. O’Connell, Trish Basanyi, David Kaplan

This will be a fascinating panel discussion on how voice actors use the Internet. Results of an extensive industry survey – jointly conducted by VoiceOverXtra and VOICE 2010 – will reveal how voice actors use the power and convenience of the Internet to:

      • find voice-over work and training,
      • serve clients (receive, record and deliver jobs),
      • market their services, and
      • conduct career research and network with colleagues.

You’ll be able to compare your own Internet use and successes with those of survey respondents, and learn additional ways to profit from the Internet.

Also, a panel of veteran voice actors will share how they personally use the Internet to enhance their voice-over careers, and answer your questions. Each panelist is extensively experienced in many facets of Internet use, but will focus on personal experiences in specific areas.

ABOUT JOHN FLORIAN:

John Florian is the founder and webmaster of VoiceOverXtra (www.VoiceOverXtra.com), the voice-over industry’s daily online news, education and resource center. He is also a voice actor specializing in voice-over narrations, including medical podcasts.

As a former business magazine writer and editor, John combined two career passions with creation of the VoiceOverXtra web site in 2007.

He spends most of his time digging up and posting voice-over industry how-to content, news and resources for VoiceOverXtra – including an industry directory, calendar of events, and many links. Many thousands subscribe to VoiceOverXtra’s free career newsletters, and the web site itself receives many hundreds of daily visitors.

The advice on VoiceOverXtra helps newcomers get started and continue on a successful career. Many seasoned pros also check in, saying they learn something new with every visit.

VoiceOverXtra also presents online voice-over training webinars and live workshops, led by many of the industry’s top coaches.

John began his voice-over career in 1999, and early on, used marketing techniques from his years in the magazine industry to quickly establish personal relationships with voice seekers and ongoing work.

PETER K. O’CONNELL: www.audioconnell.com

The company also operates International Voice Talents, featuring foreign language male and female voice actors; and the Voice Over Workshop, which provides professional voice-over training to novice and experienced voice talent.

He is also author of the e-book, The Voice Over Entrance Exam, which examines the business and performance realities of becoming a voice talent and maintaining a successful career.

He has received many honors for achievements in broadcasting, sales, marketing and community services, and has served in leadership roles on numerous boards, including a current two-year term on the board of directors of Media Communications Association-International (MCA-).

TRISH BASANYI:  www.VoiceOversByTrish.com

Trish Basanyi 150Trish Basanyi is a full-time voice talent serving clients worldwide from her home studio, and is often retained by Fortune 400 companies to provide a diverse range of voice-over projects for radio and TV commercials, web site audio, animation, streaming video, multimedia and more.

She also serves clients with real estate virtual tours, tourist attraction and museum audio tours, podcasts, radio and TV imaging and promos, corporate product marketing for DVDs, and on-hold messaging systems.

Her flexible and fast job turnaround – typically within 24 hours – leads many of these initial online clients to retain her services for future projects.

DAVID KAPLAN:  www.VoiceOnTheRun.com

David Kaplan 150David Kaplan is a voice actor who “works the Internet like nobody’s business as a tool to grow” his career. His Voice On The Run brand appropriately describes his talent and the technology he has developed to serve clients “from any place, any time.”

As he describes it:

“I started recording myself and playing around with audio at age 7 with a Webcor cassette recorder given to me by my dad. I was hooked from the start, but lost my way as I studied broadcasting at Long Island (NY) University and became a technical director for Sports Channel.

“The long and short of it is that I was always being asked to do voice work in a pinch, but I never took it seriously until a few years ago when a fire began to burn in my belly that told me this is all I ever really wanted to do.”

DOUG TURKEL: www.Unnouncer.com

Doug TurkelDoug Turkel has more than 20 years of experience as a professional voice talent. Branding himself as the “UNnouncer” – as opposed to the brash “Monster Truck” guy – he has “quietly” become the voice behind more than 10,000 spots and several TV networks. His strong roster of clients includes MasterCard, NBC/Telemundo, McDonald’s, The Travel Channel and The Discovery Channel. He is currently the promo voice of the Home Shopping Network.

Supporting his family as a freelance VO artist for more than 10 years, he also admits to being an “audio geek,” producing radio spots and audio for TV on Pro Tools. His home studio includes a Whisper Room, Neumann TLM-103 and Sennheiser MKH 416 mics, and Telos Zephyr ISDN.

“Without the Internet, it would have been nearly impossible for me to have the kind of success I’ve had,” he says. “Social media has helped, but web sites, email and Google – for research – have been instrumental in allowing me to choose to live in Miami and work worldwide. I have agents around the U.S. and a couple in Europe.

“Working from home,” he adds, “voice talent who learn to use the tools that the Internet offers can find work anywhere and everywhere.
