James Alburger’s book, The Art of Voice Acting is used as the textbook for our VoiceActing Academy workshop and seminar training. Many of the country’s top voiceover professionals and coaches will come to San Diego to teach our Elective Workshops throughout the year.
The VoiceActing Academy Curriculum:
When you enroll at the VoiceActing Academy, you’ll receive a variety of workshop and seminar training opportunities designed to help you break into the voiceover business with the right information, performing and business skills, and most important - a plan for starting and/or developing our voiceover business. If you’re already a working voice talent, you’ll learn new skills and what you need to do to take your voiceover work to the next level.
The VoiceActing Academy curriculum is divided into four areas:
Freshman Class ~ Junior Class ~ Electives ~ Masters Class
Plus, as a VoiceActing Academy student, you can join our Conductor’s Club, participate in our VoiceActing Academy Retreat, and receive advance notice and a tuition discount for the VoiceOver International Creative Experience.

Level 1
FRESHMAN CLASS (Level 1):
Taught by James Alburger & Penny Abshire.
Open enrollment for all levels of experience and beginning students.
Classroom training, in-studio training, and Telephone coaching.
- 2-Day Weekend San Diego Workshop - $697
(includes 3-hour Friday night introduction)
- 2-Day Weekend Roadshow Workshop - $797
(includes 3-hour Friday night introduction)
- 8-Week San Diego Workshop - $697
(3-hour classroom training with on-mic coaching one night each week)
- 8-Week Tele-course Level 1 - $597
(1 1/2 hour Tele-conference training with coaching. One night each week)
Level 2
JUNIOR CLASS (Level 2):
Some taught by Guest Instructors.
Must have completed a Freshman Class course or a comparable course from another instructor.
Tele-course classes are approximately 1 1/2 hour.

(Classroom training with intensive on-mic coaching)
- 6-Week Tele-course Level 2 - limited to 4 students - $597
(Personalized telephone coaching)
- 6-Week San Diego Workshops - limited to 6 students - $697
(Classroom training with on-mic coaching on specific area of VO)
- Guest Instructor Workshops (Electives) - Varies
(Classroom or studio training - details will vary with course)
- Monthly Copy Workout (San Diego Only) - $35
(Must have completed at least one Freshman course or audition to attend.)
ELECTIVES (Topical):
Tuition fees will vary depending on class, length, and instructor.
Must have completed at least one Freshman Class course.
Most Elective Classes are held on a weekend in San Diego or Los Angeles.
Elective Classes may be 1/2 day, 1-Day, or 2-Day.

Advanced and Optional
CONDUCTOR’S CLUB: $60/month or $600 annual prepaid
Membership in the VoiceActing Academy Conductor’s Club is available to anyone interested in improving their voiceover performing and business skills. You do not need to be enrolled in any VoiceActing Academy courses to be a member of the Conductor’s Club.

As a Conductor’s Club member you receive:
- Monthly conference calls - some with guest instructors
(Calls are designed to answer your questions, discuss specific areas of voiceover work, interview professional voice talent, or provide specialized seminar training.)
- 20% Discount on private one-on-one coaching
- 20% Discount on any Freshman, Junior, Elective, or Masters Class workshop produced by VoiceActing Academy and taught by James & Penny
(Discount not available on workshops or training not produced by VoiceActing Academy, VOICE conference, Academy Retreat, or for workshops taught by Guest Instructors)
- Evaluation of your current demo and marketing
- Submit up to 1 minute of audio each month for a personalized evaluation
(Evaluation is based on submission of an MP3 file with an MP3 file evaluation returned to member.)
- Personalized consultations with James & Penny
(Members may schedule a 30-minute personalized consultation each month to discuss any aspect of voiceover, including technical trouble-shooting, performance, marketing, demo prep, etc.)
- Special bonus benefits for VOICE conference - available only for Conductor’s Club members (see below)
- Receive an additional $50 tuition discount for any VOICE conference as a Conductor’s Club member.
- Receive preferred seating at the VOICE banquet.
- Exclusive social hour with the VOICE conference special guests, producers, staff, exhibitors, and presenters available only to Conductor’s Club members.
THE ACADEMY RETREAT:
Tuition is TBA depending on resort location and event details.
Available only upon completion of at least two Junior Class courses or comparable training.
Attendance limited to 20 students or alumni.
- Held at a major hotel or resort
- 5-Days (Monday - Friday) plus optional weekends
- 4 hour morning coaching sessions
- Most afternoons free
- 3-4 hour mastermind sessions most evenings
- Other benefits and activities to be announced
VOICE - The VoiceOver International Creative Experience:
All VoiceActing Academy graduates receive a basic discount on VOICE tuition.
